Summary on Grant Application Form
Existing carbon-carbon bond forming reactions will be applied, and new reactions will be developed, for the synthesis of novel types of polymer in which ortho, meta or para C2B10 carborane icosahedra are linked directly to through benzene rings and/or acetylenic units. The target polymers include chain polymers incorporating carborane polyhedra in the polymer backbone, chains with pendant carborane groups, network polymers, and dendritic systems. Ring opening polymerisations will also be explored. Products will be characterised and, by use of established deboronation reactions, converted from hydrophobic closo systems into hydrophilic metal-co-ordinating nido anionic C2B9 systems offering ion-exchange potential. Thermal conversion of selected polymers into cross-linked ceramic residues related to boron carbide will be studied with the object of generating further materials offering ion-exchange potential.
