Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme consists of two inter-related elements: (a) improvement of numerical models of cross-shore beach profile evolution and (b) laboratory experimental studies of such evolution. The former will be based on an original model developed by Nairn (PhD Imperial College, 1991) which was incorporated into a quasi 3-dimensional model in collaboration with Sir William Halcrow and Partners and HR Limited, Wallingford, now used extensively in practice. The cross-shore model will be developed further in several key aspects which are given in the Case for Support.A recent review of scale-model laws, coupled with physical model tests at IC, shows that there remain significant deficiencies in these laws, especially in the use of light-weight sediments at small scale. The new Coastal Research Facility (CRF) will be used at such scales and it is therefore intended to undertake 2-dimensional model tests at IC at the scale at which the CRF will operate.Appropriate full-scale and large laboratory-scale data will also be used for both numerical model and small-scale laboratory test validation. The CRF will not be used within the present proposal's work plan.
