The tandem coupling of two p-components about zirconocene to afford zirconacyclopentanoids, insertion of allyl metal carbenoids to afford (E)-1-zirconcycloct-3-enes, and finally insertion of electrophiles into the reactive allylic carbon-zirconium bond provides a powerful 4-component coupling reaction (up to 95% yield overall already achieved). Excellent stereocontrol including remote (1, 6 and 1, 7) diastereocontrol result from the metal template. We propose to develop this into a versatile method for organic synthesis. A particular application is the efficient synthesis of diterpenoids of the dolabellane class (bicyclo[9.3.0] tetradecenes) many of which have interesting antimicrobial, antiviral, and anticancer properties.The insertion of a wide range of other metal carbenoids (propargyl, vinyl, alkyl) into carbon-zirconium bonds will then be investigated.Extension of the above methods to the elaboration of alkyl and vinyl zirconocene chlorides derides derived from hydrozirconation will greatly extend the synthetic utility of what is already an important reaction.
