The main aim of this research is to take a major step forward in determining whether magnetic field is important in laser driven ablation when a target is irradiated by (a) a high intensity tightly focused laser beam, (b) a non-uniform laser beam under conditions appropriate to Inertial Confinement Fusion. An azimuthal magnetic field is generated around a laser hot spot by non-parallel density and temperature gradients. The magnetic field may (a) inhibit energy transport out of the hot spot, (b) collimate the outflowing plasma into a jet. The investigation will require us to write a Fokker-Planck code which models a magnetised plasma in two spatial and one velocity dimension. More general aspects of two-dimensional non-local transport in a magnestised plasma will also be examined.
