Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this research proposal is to investigate the effects of wind on the design for natural ventilation in commercial buildings. The project will review naturally ventilated commercial buildings and identify the main components of the ventilation design. From the review buildings and devices which incorporate specific strategies for natural ventilation will be identified for investigation. Wind tunnel studies will be carried out on these buildings and devices. From these investigations methods of designing natural ventilation strategies and devices (such as roof vents) that will work for varying wind speed and direction will be derived. These will be tested in the wind tunnel. Computer airflow modelling will be used to assess internal air flow and ventilation performance for combined wind and stack ventilation. Guidelines will be produced for natural ventilation for commercial buildings.
