The effects of local inertia (microinertia) on the deformation mechanisms of a class of impact energy absorbers whose behaviour is characterised by the existence of an initial instability in their load-deflection trace will be examined experimentally. In order to do this a technique which utilises a deconvolution procedure will be employed in order to measure accurately and record the transient forces when the energy absorber is deformed dynamically. Based upon the results of applying this technique to a range of energy absorbing structures, systems and materials, theoretical models for the absorbers will be developed. These will enable more accurate assessments to be made of the force levels generated during operation, clarify our understanding of the main energy absorbing mechanisms and contribute to the evolution of more effective and efficient impact energy absorbers.
