Summary on Grant Application Form
Many practical applications of machine vision require the ability to characterise texture. The problem has consequently received much attention but still lacks a satisfactory solution. An idea common to several of the most successful existing approaches is that of characterising the context of each image pixel by measuring a number of local, or relatively local properties This is usually followed by feature extraction in which the distributions of values for these properties are summarised over image regions. We propose a new method for measuring local properties, based on the use of mathematical morphology. We argue that this approach should improve the ability to discriminate between textures. We propose to implement a texture analysis system based on our ideas and compare its performance with the best existing methods. In our tests we intend to use both synthetic textures, for which others have already published results, and images from real applications where we will be interested in both relative and absolute performance.
