1. To synthesise novel calixarene receptors with high selectivity for cation complexation;2. To probe the influence of irradiation on ligand-cation interactions using pulsed laser methods and characterise the spectroscopic properties of the complexes; and3. To develop light-operated systems suitable for complexation/decomplexation routines applicable to transport of biologically significant cations.
