Summary on Grant Application Form |
The overall aim of this research is to develop an integrative framework for the predictive modelling of traffic control systems. The work will progress in two strands. The first strand, of 12 months duration, will develop a new modular software structure suited to real-time decision support of traffic control systems. The second strand, of 36 months duration, will focus on the development of a predictive traffic simulation, the development of a probabilisitc state estimation and the integration of the decision support system. The work is complementary to the work of other researches on the development of new control algorithms and it is general in that it provides harness for the evaluation of any control algorithm in the context of both actual and simulated measurement data. The research is original in that it will quantify the confidence limits associated with the city traffic predictions. It is intended that the research will provide a tool for other researchers to investigate complex traffic control strategies before such controls are actually committed to field trials.
