Materials with novel magnetic, electronic and charge-transport properties will be constructed systematically from redox-active transition metal complex ions. Attention will be focused on the use of salts containing mono- and dimeric anionic dithiolene complexes, and clusters with aromatic p-ligands. Very pure salts, prepared by chemical synthesis and/or electrocrystallisation, will allow detailed magnetic and conductivity studies at variable temperature both on bulk polycrystalline solids and on single crystals. Throughout, x-ray crystallographic studies will play a central role in defining the structure-property relationships linking molecular and crystal structure with magnetic, electronic and charge-transport behaviour. In turn this will aid the design of new materials.
