Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to investigate the physics of microchip lasers to develop a number of novel ultra-compact sources of high quality laser radiation at a number of wavelengths. Our successful sandwich laser concept of combined gain and nonlinear materials to frequency double microchip lasers will be extended to higher powers and into the blue. Novel modulation schemes will be investigated, which will allow the generation of nanosecond pulses through Q-switching or gain switching. Assessment of the physical properties of different gain and nonlinear materials, and their impact on the operation of various geometries of microchip lasers will be undertaken. This will result in specifications to guide in the choice of appropriate materials for all the above devices.
