Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme will develop interferometric optical sensors capable of high bandwidth thermal and pressure measurements in gas flow. These data are required in experimental studies of flow. These data are required in experimental studies of flow in turbomachinery such as engine compressors. Research on optical fibre heat flux gauged, on thin film coatings for temperature measurement and on pressure sensors will take place at Heriot-Watt University. Aerodynamic and heat transfer aspects of probe design will involve collaboration with Oxford University, as will calibration experiments for comparison with existing sensors. Trial experiments using heat flux, temperature and pressure probes will be made at Oxford. Finally, developed probes will be used in a programme of experiments at DRA Pyestock, using a shock tube tunnel and the Isentropic Light Piston Facility for investigation of the unsteady temperature field in the wake of a turbine rotor.
