Summary on Grant Application Form
The purpose of the work is the measurement of instantaneous chordwise pressure variations during blade-vortex interaction. The work is divided into two distinct but related sections. In the first stage of the work, the existing proven blade-vortex interaction facility in the Glasgow University 1.62m x 2.13m low speed wind tunnel will be used to study the parallel and oblique interaction between a single convecting vortex and a rotor blade set at varying degrees of moderate incidence. This work will extend the current database established at Glasgow for zero incidence and will provide valuable fundamental insight into the modification of the interaction process when significant natural circulation is present on the blade. In the second phase, a vortex system akin to that produced by a Vane Tip will be generated in the wind tunnel and interacted with a rotating blade. Comparison of the resulting pressure histories with the extant database will provide detailed information on the manner in which the interaction process is favourable modified by the twin vortex system. It is likely that the work will contribute substantially to on-going blade design studies in the UK rotorcraft industry.
