Summary on Grant Application Form
A finite element model to simulate brain motions and deformations during head impact will be developed using DYNA3D. New features of the model will be simulation of the spinal canal via an appropriate boundary condition at the foramen magnum, as well as simulation of the subarachnoid space. Efforts will focus separately on the short timescales characteristic of compression waves, and the longer time scales characteristic of shear wave propagation through the brain. Informal collaboration with the Laboratoire des Systemes Biomechaniques in Strasbourg will permit transfer of expertise from work already in progress. Applications include helmet and vehicle design criteria for protection against head injuries.
