Summary on Grant Application Form
A compact absorber/heat exchanger has been developed in this department and used in experimental work on an Absorption Heat Transformer (AHT) for heat recovery from humid dryer exhausts. Using waste heat at ~90C, exit temperatures of up to 160C have been achieved, and this is close to the level at which heat pumping across the pinch could provide major fuel savings in integrated processes. We propose to extend this work, using wellcharacterised, high-temperature absorption working fluid pairs, to deliver useful heat at 200C+ utilising only waste heat at ~100C.Experimental work and computer simulation will elucidate factors affecting the rates of simultaneous heat and mass transfer in the absorber. This should lead to the development of a design method for the AHT. Operating experience will be obtained with selected working fluids to permit optimisation of the operating conditions required for high temperature lift, and to determine the requirements for control of the AHT under conditions of varying load. ICI Chemicals and Polymers (Runcorn) will provide working fluids, thermodynamic data and technical expertise. British Gas plc Research and Technology will provide technical support and access to industrial case studies in the fields of fuel efficiency, CHP etc. Contact will be maintained with these and other potential industrial users of high temperature AHTs throughout a project advisory group which will meet four times during the programme.
