Traditional passenger travel demand models have served conventional transport planning activities (eg regional planning analysis) reasonably well, especially when properly supported with adequate data, good computational resources and competent technical staff. Extension of these models to address the range of issues that would be raised by the introduction of fully operational ATT, however, exposes many of the traditional weaknesses of these models and stirs many new problems that are not usually critical in conventional regional planning. The proposed research will critically examine the current state-of-the-art of passenger travel demand modelling in light of ATT needs and implications. First, human factors in ATT such as information needs, preferences, and response to the conveyed information under different travel conditions and socio-demographic characteristics will be examined. This will be followed by a critical literature review of the state-of-the-art transport modelling under ATT. The review will be based on an explicity set of criteria that include theoretical soundness, data requirements, computational feasibility, and policy sensitivity. Areas of weakness will then be identified and future development needs and research work will be discussed.
