Summary on Grant Application Form
Homogeneous catalytic reactions will be used to synthesise new polymeric Lewis bases. These will be co-ordinated to metal alkyls and the resulting complexes reacted with hydrides of group 15 and/or 16 to produce nanoscale semiconductor particles of binary, ternary, quaternary, dilute magnetic or doped semiconductors. The polymer will bind the alkyl reversibly so as to control the rate of nucleation relative to the rate of growth, but the Lewis base groups will bind to the particle to inhibit growth of large particles and coagulation. Resulting materials will be characterised by X-ray diffraction, XPS, photoacoustic spectroscopy, TEM etc. and will be fabricated into electrode modifying films for the study of photoelectrochemical phenomena, photochemical energy storage, luminescence and magnetic properties.
