the objective of the research is to establish a thorough understanding of in-well and cross-well carrier transport dynamics in multiple quantum well (MQW) semiconductors relevant to present and future optoelectronic and electronic devices. The complex, ultrafast movement of electrons and holes within and between quantum wells is not yet well understood, however these processes determine the basic operation and fundamental limits of MQW devices. The main thrusts of the proposed research are (I) multi-wavelength ultrashort pulse source development over a broad spectral region, (ii) characterisation of dynamical nonlinearities and carrier transport dynamics in as-grown quantum wells, detectors and modulators, (iii) investigation of the effects on the time constants of cross-well transport after controlled post-growth intermixing, and (iv) time resolved studies of inter-subband dynamics.
