Summary on Grant Application Form
Existing micromagnetic models of rigid disk storage media will be developed to study reversal, recording and noise mechanisms in Metal Evaporated Tape (MET). This work will complement ongoing industrially funded work on analytical modelling and experimental measurements of digital recording on MET. The aim of the programme will be to reveal the microstructural properties of MET which will be necessary for ultra high density digital storage in the same manner that micromagnetics has been employed to optimise the performance of rigid disk media. Micromagnetic simulation of MET will be computationally extremely demanding, and will require substantial development of the algorithms and visualisation techniques employed for simulation of rigid disk media under our existing grant GR/H 02479, which ends in October 1994.
