Summary on Grant Application Form
The initial stage of the programme will refine and apply the experimental method for characterising low frequency transmission paths between adjacent dwellings which was introduced in the pilot MSc project (Ref 3). The objective will be to establish generic forms of transfer function suitable for incorporation into a system model for the purpose of selecting appropriate control strategies and transducer configurations. Then, a modal model of the sound field in a room will be used to investigate the influence of various actuator-sensor configurations on performance and to establish the associated loop delay. Theoretical optimisation and prediction of system performance will follow. a prototype control system will be realised and its performance under a range of typical noise sources will be tested in a range of typical dwellings. The system will then be refined in the light of experience.
