Summary on Grant Application Form
The project is aimed at developing a novel form of image data compression system called a 2-D coder, in which image motion is modelled as the motion in 3-D of a collection of planar patches. The resulting coder should be capable of compression ratios approaching those of the 3-D model based coders, but with the robustness in respect of scene content which current model based coders lack. The key to achieving this level of performance is the use of an affine model of motion, which gives a much more accurate description of 3-D surface motion than conventional optical flow or block matching. The motion estimation will be performed using a multi resolution method based on a generalised wavelet transform, developed at Warwick as a general tool for image analysis and low level vision. Progress: Basic motion estimation and feature extraction algorithms have been completed and tested on image sequences. The work will be reported at the European Symposium on Advanced Networks and Services in Amsterdam.
