The part of the collaborative research programme to be carried out at Hull involves the synthesis and characterisation of novel low molar mass chiral materials, with the objective of specifically designing materials with projected properties conducive to fast electro-optic switching processes. A select number of liquid crystal systems have been targeted for investigation, each of which will have different possible applications as outlined in the Exeter and Cambridge parts of this interdisciplinary programme. For the purposes of designing a fast switching system, the following liquid crystal phenomena merit investigation:i) Electroclinic switching in chiral nematic phases.ii) Electroclinic switching smectic A phases.iii) Electrical switching in biaxial nematic phases.Many f these effects are relatively new, however, a reasonable amount of fundamental work in these areas has been carried out at Hull in the past through our ongoing research into ferroelectric materials, e.g., our studies on twist inversion phenomena has given us access to materials that also exhibit electroclinism in the unwound chiral nematic phase, N. Thus, the proposal outlines the material design requirements for the synthesis of materials with properties tuned for the investigation of the above phenomena.
