Summary on Grant Application Form
The application is for a high performance colour graphics workstation to advance the research potential of the Reading half of the Institute for Computational Fluid Dynamics in a number of key areas. The equipment will support the computation and visualisation necessary to advance current projects and to undertake new projects and to undertake new projects in the near future. The three current projects which would gain most immediate benefit from such equipment are multi-dimensional upwinding for the Euler equations, adaptive finite element methods for nonlinear convection-diffusion equations and the investigation of the dynamics of discretisations used in Computational Fluid Dynamics. The equipment will enhance present two-dimensional calculations and facilitate three-dimensional computations not presently viable, both in terms of computing power and visualisation of the results. In addition it will greatly aid the investigation of the spurious projects, both current and in the planning, which will benefit include three-dimensional grid generation, uncertainty modelling in oil recovery, semi-Lagrangian and Lagrange Galerkin methods, solution of the Navier Stokes equations and porous media flow.
