Pulse combustors are attractive in a wide variety of applications, such as space heating, industrial process heating and gas turbine combustors. Their advantages result from the high combustion intensities obtainable, together with enhanced heat transfer rates and the pressure gain generated in the combustion chamber.There is recent evidence that pulse combustion produces low emissions, not only of unburned hydrocarbons and CO, but also of NOx: however, there has been no systematic study reported on this aspect of combustor performance. This proposal involves the construction of a gas-fired Schmidt Tube combustor in which it will be possible to vary independently the frequency and amplitude of oscillation and hence measure emissions over a wide range of operating conditions.It is proposed to develop a model of NOx formation in a time-dependent pressure and temperature field. This will enable a comparison of model prediction with measurements made on the prototype combustor and contribute to the understanding of the influential mechanisms involved. The model will also have general applicability to systems which experience temperature and pressure perturbations such as engine combustion chambers and exhausts.
