Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research is to develop a driver scheduling system which meets some, but not all, of the special working conditions applicable to British Rail. A two-phase framework used in most bus driver scheduling systems will be adopted. The first Generation Phase will construct potentially acceptable drivers duties, while the second Selection Phase selects from the possible drivers duties a subset which will together cover all the required work at minimum or near minimum cost. The plan is to adapt, where appropriate, techniques already researched at Leeds and to evolve new ones for each phase to meet rail requirements as closely as possible.
