Improved synthetic routes are sought to microporous sorbents (particularly zeolitic silicas) for use in environmental beneficiation. The aim is to increase the range of materials accessible and to reduce their cost. The emphasis is on existing materials of known utility rather than totally new structures. New chemistry and new synthetic techniques are to be investigated in three areas: (i) hydrothermal synthesis at very low water content, (ii) synthesis in organic oxygenates (eg glycols) and (iii) Lowmelting organic salts as reaction media. The former topics are chosen on the basis of success already achieved and the latter as a more speculative area of chemical significance. Microwave heating will be compared with conventional methods and previous studies will be exploited in the control of crystal nucleation and growth. In addition to the main application, the potential of the developed methods for the modification of existing sorbent and catalyst crystals will be assessed. It is believed that the studies will also provide a new perspective on the mechanism of molecular sieve synthesis. The programme will be strengthened by collaboration with a major chemical company (ICI) which will provide both additional resources and guidance on commercial application.
