We intend to explore the scope of newly discovered aspects of dediazoniation reactions for the preparation of fluoroarenes. Initially , we intend to investigate the photolysis of a range of arenediazonium salts as a very much more efficient method of effecting dediazoniation. In particular, we shall target salts which are known to react only slowly under normal thermal conditions. Secondly we intend to investigate the use for X-fluoroethers as alternatives to trifluoroethanol as nucleophilic traps for the transient aryl carbenium ions generated in the above-mentioned dediazoniation reactions. We shall explore the possibility that this could be developed in to a catalytic process. Finally we intend to exploit the above methods to develop efficient syntheses of specific fluoroarenes, e.g., 1, 3-difluorobenzene, which are made be current methods only very inefficiently.
