|
The purpose of the proposed research is to determine the potential and establish systematic procedures for risk assessment of geomechanics aspects of underground excavations. In particular the task of decision-making under risk will be addressed for this challenging environment. Both economic and safety aspects will be addressed. Types of excavations to be considered will include both mining and civil engineering applications. The procedures will consist of a broad logic structure (flowcharts/decision tree/expert system) within which new and existing computer programmes will be used for specific risk analysis and design tasks. The geomechanics research and consultancy experience at CSM in risk assessment will be combined with experience in decision theory and operational research at the Department of Mathematical Statistics and OR. The work will involve collaboration with several mining and civil engineering organisations, mainly in the UK.
