Summary on Grant Application Form
This research project is concerned with devising, implementing and evaluating novel optical receiver structures appropriate to very high capacity soliton transmission systems. Recent work by Professor O'Reilly and his collaborators has identified a means of modelling and potentially improving the performance of receivers for soliton systems impaired by Gordon-Haus jitter, soliton source jitter and polarisation mode dispersion induced effects. The technique is applicable also to reducing the effect of collision-induced jitter in prospective WDM soliton systems. This offers the prospect of ameliorating the impact of these impairments on system performance. In particular, this approach to receiver design and signal processing will make it possible to relax the tightness of the requirements for guiding/sliding filters, improving system transparency and practical maintainability, thereby enhancing deployment options for these systems. In addition to identifying and experimentally proving these novel receiver concepts it is planned, via interaction with BT Laboratories, to establish quantitatively and experimentally demonstrate the degree of systems improvement attainable.
