|
The work programme will involve investigation of the basic mechanisms of pollutant movement and determination of fundamental parameters affecting pollutant distribution and removal from vehicles. Detailed measurement of pollutant flow within and around vehicles will take place using scale-models of vehicles in a wind tunnel. State-of-the-art tracer-gas and particle monitoring technology will be used to determine pollutant levels and cross-contamination between vehicles. The ventilation effectiveness, age of air, particle concentration and deposition on various interior surfaces of the vehicle will be examined. CFD modelling of pollutant flow within and around the models will be carried out in parallel with experiments. Work will also involve field testing in vehicles to determine pollutant levels (eg VOC, 03, 00, N20) to which occupants are exposed during different driving conditions. Questionnaires and measurements will be used to determine whether vehicle emissions during commuting periods contribute to an individual's response to SBS.
