Robustness in security systems is a new subject the importance of which is being recognised quite widely in the research community. Publications are beginning to appear which derive engineering principles from theoretical investigation, and this work shows promise of being really useful. The present project is intended to press forward the study of robustness beyond the area of cryptographic protocols where it first appeared, and extend it to a wide range of components of secure systems. Emphasis will be placed on recovery from failure or compromise; too many proposals in the literature depend on a degree of operational perfection that is quite unrealistic. It seems that the derivation of engineering principles follows from proper theoretical understanding, so part of the project will involve extending that understanding to security components it has not yet reached.
