Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to continue and develop our current programme of low temperature magnetisation, resistance and magnetoresistance measurements on novel rare-earth metal multilayers. Our principal aim is to understand and quantify the extremely interesting new magnetic behaviour we have observed in Gd-based multilayers and to investigate whether similar behaviour occurs in related artificial systems of rare-earth metals interlayered with mutually insoluble and non-reacting elements in the Cr and V groups. We also propose to extend our investigations to include investigation of the properties of co-sputtered alloys of the rare-earths with Cr- and V- group elements, and to study the evolution of their properties and microstructure on annealing.
