Cured in place pipe (CIPP) linings are now used exptensively to renovate deteriorating sewer pipes. Systems with circular geometry fail by constrained creep buckling of the polymeric lining subject to external (groundwater) pressure. Design focuses on providing an adequate safety factor against this occurring within a specified design life. Current design guidelines are very crude whilst a fully consistent analysis is complex. It is believed that by only taking account of the dominant (axial) creep strains, simple but rational design criteria can be developed. This proposal describes the envisaged procedure tension of this work to include due consideration of the effects of creep and arching on the behaviour of linings in pipes having 'egg' shaped cross section is also proposed. A further extension is required to investigate behaviour of CIPP lined systems for potable water mains subject primarily to internal pressure. Current available American design guidelines for these systems assume simplified geometry, structural behaviour and material properties. However no significant research has been undertaken to investigate the implications of these assumptions. This programme will provide important information to ensure simple, rational and efficient design guidelines can be established for these systems.
