Summary on Grant Application Form
The research seeks to develop a novel non-destructive monitoring system for assessing the condition and integrity of ground anchorages, which may suffer change in prestress, debonding or localised corrosion. Anchorage condition is assessed by analysing the anchorage response motion to an impulse load using neural network pattern recognition systems. The programme includes a detailed analysis of existing field results including 9000 dynamic responses to study the patterns where prestress, debonding, bolt length and rock mass classification have been changed. Concurrently a prototype impulse loading/monitoring system, including software for interpretation of dynamic response signatures will be developed. To relate physical condition to response signature large scale gun barrel tests will be carried out on anchorages with and without controlled defects and include the influence of prestress. The prototype will also be tested on field anchorages in a variety of ground conditions to extend the database on response signature and study their patterns where the anchorage geometry and prestress are varied. Several test anchorages will be taken to failure to study signatures under limiting conditions.
