The separation of dispersed oil from water is a major topic of interest to the oil and process industries. Crossflow filtration can provide efficient oil removal but conventional filter membranes do not provide adequate permeate flux rates for offshore use and may clog with suspended matter. True surface filters, ie ones that do not rely on depth filtration for dispersed phase removal, will be used to crossflow filter oil emulsions in the concentration range 100 to 10,000 ppm oil in water. Surface filter design: pore size, surface charge and control (permeate backpressure, flow, etc), together with carefully characterised droplets: surface charge, size and distribution in water of various ionic strengths will be investigated. To assist in oil rejection an imposed rotational flow on the fluid will be used, inducing a centrifugal field force away from the filter surface. In addition both continuous and intermittent air injection into the system will be used to provide oil drop flotation, with a consequently enhanced centrifugal field force.
