Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are formed in most combustion and incineration processes and are a serious environmental hazard, being linked with causing bronchitis, pneumonia, viral infections, and alterations to the immune system. In the case of diesel and lean-burn petrol engines, the exhaust contains NOx in the presence of a large excess of oxygen. Currently, for automotive applications, there is no acceptable way of removing this NOx. The purpose of this research is to investigate novel promoted catalysts which may be capable of selectively reducing NOx, using the unburnt hydrocarbons, in the exhaust, in a strongly oxidizing atmosphere. The research will involve the synthesis, characterisation, and testing of promoted platinumbased catalysts. Kinetic measurements, including dynamic response microreactor studies, and rapid (millisecond) transient response experiments, will be used to investigate reaction mechanisms. If successful, the research could have a significant impact on solving the problem of diesel and leanburn engine emission control.
