The programme of this proposal will aim to advance the fundamental physical understanding of the subject which is part of the developing area of relativistic, non-neutral and nonlinear plasma physics. We will apply this understanding to our experiments. These involve the exponentially nonlinear interaction between intense relativistic electron beams and EM radiation propagating within large magnetic fields. We would further the development of recent work which has greatly simplified the theory of the cyclotron resonance maser (gyrotron) and the cyclotron auto-resonance maser (CARM). This has reduced their equations of evolution to a form identical with those of the Compton regime free electron laser (FEL). The connection between these theories would be exploited, the FEL theory containing a more extensive body of work on phenomena not yet investigated in the cyclotron resonance devices. We would apply the method of this theory to other electron beam devices, with the aim of simplifying their theories, so providing a more unified approach to their study. The theoretical and computational modelling for the ongoing high power microwave experiments of the group would be developed and supported. It is hoped this will lead to further new world first experiments.
