Summary on Grant Application Form
The key to very low power solid-state gas detection (as needed for battery operation and via Zener barriers in hazardous areas) lies in the development of miniature substrates. It is proposed to design and fabricate silicon substrates to fulfil this need, for which research into the possibility of including self-heating (such as via buried Zener diodes) is necessary. Further work on high temperature operation of silicon devices is also proposed, including determination of whether signal conditioning elements can be included. The question of bonding to the active material must also be addressed. The final result should be a very low power gas sensor for industrial, commercial and domestic usage.
