The proposed programme is directed towards the development of thin film crystal growth of photorefractive materials by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) and investigation of the fundamental structural and optical properties of the resulting materials. The studies will focus primarily upon a group of three structurally related materials, potassium niobate (KNbO3), barium titanate (BaTiO3) and solid solutions of potassium tantalate niobate (KTN), grown on a variety of substrates. The proposed investigations will enable definition of the rules governing epitaxy and substrate-layer orientation relationships in these and related systems. They will also provide a detailed insight into the inter-relationships between layer growth conditions, substrate type, post-growth treatments, structural quality and the basic photorefractive properties of thin film materials.
