Nitrides are materials with fundamentally important properties: wear resistance; hardness; refractory coatings; electrical conductivity and catalytic action. Conventional routes to nitrides rely on either high temperature combination of the elements or high temperature deposition of films. This proposal aims to synthesise both new and existing nitrides at low temperature for catalytic and hardness applications. Low temperature synthesis may enable tailoring or reaction components, stoicheometric reaction control and production of nitrides with high surface areas.The low temperature synthesis of metal nitrides from reactions of homoleptic metal amides with ammonia is the major goal of the project. The production of binary nitrides and ternary nitrides MM N will be investigated and the mechanism pathway to nitride formation via thermolysis will be addressed by FTIR/GC. X-ray powder diffraction, GC/MS and programmed thermolysis/TGA. The physical properties of the nitrides especially catalytic potential and hardness/abrasive resistance will be evaluated in collaboration with industry.
