Summary on Grant Application Form
Hidden Markov random field models are generalisations of hidden Markov chains and mixture models. They find application in areas such as statistical image analysis, but the problem of parameter estimation is difficult. A variety of approaches have been tried in recent years, and new methods continue to appear. The essence of the programme is to develop current ideas of the proposer, to assess critically, with further development as appropriate, several of the most promising competitors from outside, and to illustrate the methods in various application areas to which the proposer has access. The implications of the methodology for activities such as image restoration will also be investigated. The broad objective is to undertake a comprehensive, in-depth investigation of an intriguing, non-trivial and important area of parameter estimation.
