Significant efforts are currently underway to reduce aircraft drag through the maintenance of laminar flow on both wings and engine nacelles through boundary layer suction. In order to achieve the full energy saving promise of this technology, methods must be established to automatically and adaptively adjust suction rates over an array of suction panels. This is necessary to achieve laminar flow at minimum suction as aerodynamic conditions (speed, altitude, attitude, atmospheric turbulence) vary during flight. The objective of the work proposed is to devise control systems enabling this technology to become viable in practice.
