Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed work extends from recent research at Oxford Brookes University which has demonstrated the potential for external reinforcement of structures by adhesive-bonded composite plates. The investigation brings together several disciplines including polymer composites, adhesive bonding, civil engineering and modelling of behaviour of structures in service environments. The first stage of the project addresses the properties of adhesive materials and joining techniques which are essential to load transfer between the structure and the reinforcement. A large-scale parametric experimental investigation will then determine the characteristics of both composite reinforced beams and strengthened cast iron structures, and numerical modelling techniques will be developed to provide a design base for the application of the method to real structures. The industrial partners in the broader LINK project will use the information generated to formulate adhesive and composite materials and to develop procedures for strengthening 18m beams. Instrumentation installed in these full-scale structures will enable behaviour under load to be monitored to provide correlation with analytical models. Ultimately the scientific, technical and design knowledge will be fed into a draft code of practice compiled by the partners in the LINK project.
