Summary on Grant Application Form
The research programme is based on three projects:(i) the study of clustering in nuclei;(ii) the study of rare isotopes by means of high resolution laser spectroscopy;(iii) the study of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The first makes use of a large array of detectors which has been conducted by a collaboration of several universities - the Charissa project - to search for highly deformed configurations in light nuclei. The experimental work is being conducted at the Australian National University as part of an investigation of clusters in light nuclei and the dynamics of nuclear reactions. The laser group is making use of facilities at the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland to measure sizes and moments of short-lived radio-isotopes by means of co-linear laser spectroscopy. The third project is directed at an investigation of heavy-ion collisions at CERN as part of the NA49 collaboration. The investigation will use lead beams in a search for the quark gluon plasma as one aspect of the study of nuclear matter at high temperature and pressure.
