Prototype sensorless, induction-motor, drives will be developed on this project. The aim is to obtain excellent speed holding performance and to provide a good speed bandwidth. These drives will substantially outperform current sensorless drives. The target specifications are sufficient to enable the drive to replace current, closed loop DC technology using speed feedback by armature compensation or analogue tachometer. Sensorless position information will be less than those which could be achieved with a digital encoder. However, there will be sufficient accuracy for speed synchronisation in multiple motor drive applications. Advanced signal processing techniques will be exploited for speed position detection. The processing techniques will be embedded into prototype inverter drives and the computational efficiency and robustness of the detection and control algorithms will be maximised in the practical drive environment. The project will also assess the influence of induction motor design parameters upon performance and reliability of the speed and position detection processing.
