Summary on Grant Application Form
A 200kV transmission electron microscope will be used to carry out in situ studies of phase transformations in a range of aluminium and titanium based alloys and particulate composite materials. Specifically, dispersoid coarsening in rapidly solidified gas atomised aluminium alloys, ordering and alpha-2 precipitation in near-alpha titanium alloys, athermal and isothermal omega phase formation in beta titanium alloys, precipitation reactions in Al-Li based alloys, stress influenced precipitation in single crystal aluminium alloys, and precipitation in particulate reinforced aluminium alloy metal matrix composites will be examined to determine the nature, sequence and kinetics of the reactions involved.
