Summary on Grant Application Form
The research programme is to investigate the ultrasonic behaviour of highly textured samples of high temperature superconductors in the presence of magnetic fields. Previous ultrasonic studies have revealed absorption peaks and steps in the elastic moduli which are not observed in zero field. This has been interpreted as being due to the interaction between the ultrasonic waves and the flux lattice. Consequently, the use of ultrasonic waves provides a sensitive technique for studying flux lattice dynamics. Comprehensive information should result from a systematic ultrasonic investigation obtained by varying the strength and orientation of the magnetic field as well as the direction and mode propagation of the sound waves. The measurements would be extended to single crystals of high temperature superconductors should suitable samples become available. The whole investigation should provide considerable new insight into the nature of the flux lattice dynamics in high Tc superconductors.
