Photon emission from the STM in ultra high vacuum gives us a unique method by which we can get a measure of inelastic interactions while operating the instrument; this will give us a more complete understanding of the processes involved in the tip/surface interaction during tunnelling and should be of use in analysis of certain modification experiments in the STM. This study will be aided by completion of an optimised optical multichannel spectrometer to allow spectral analysis of the emitted light. Initially, I will be trying to determine the effects of molecular overlayers on the photon emission processes from idealised surfaces (epitaxial Ag in U.H.V). It is hoped that this tool will provide additional information about these molecular systems - an area in which the STM has been to date disappointing. I then hope to combine the study with an investigation of photon emission from nanofabricated structures on different materials (as part of Prof A Broers nanofabrication group we have facilities to make highly characterised test structures for this purpose). I want to study local luminescence from semiconductors as affected by structure. Finally, I would like to investigate the polarisation of the photons and the direction in which they are emitted as determined by the properties of the tip and sample.
