This research programme seeks to combine extremely sensitive MOKE magnetic measurements with polarisation analysis of secondary electrons and high resolution Auger spectroscopic studies of film composition and morphology, in order to elucidate the mechanisms by which the presence of the magnetic/non-magnetic interface influences the magnetic behaviour. The programme builds on our recent work in Cambridge which reveals unexpectedly large changes in the magnetism of Cu/Co overlayer structures upon the deposition of submonolayer coverages of Cu. By making use of the ability of angle resolved Auger spectroscopy to determine the degree of short range atomic order, it is proposed to distinguish effects of film structure from 2D magnetic effects. We also propose to search for magnetism in a new class of ultra-thin magnetic materials, that of 2D surface alloys, such as Mn/Cu(001) in which the surface stabilises the alloy structure over as wide temperature range.
