Summary on Grant Application Form
1. To carry out a detailed design study of a 250 BAR Hyperbaric Welding Facility. 2. To supervise the construction of such a facility. 3. To commission the system and carry out a series of trials to demonstrate the functional capabilities of the facility. This project will finalise the design, construction and commissioning of a hyperbaric welding research facility capable of simulating water depths of 2.5 km. It is anticipated that the offshore industry will be operating in these depths in about ten years time, and because they are not accessible to divers, repair and fabrication techniques capable of remote operation will be required. The facility will be used, in the first instance, to carry out welding process feasibility studies and characterisation trials, to obtain the data required to design operational welding systems. At a later date, industrially supported specific welding trials may also be conducted.
